Vanishing act

So I was talking with my buddy the other day about how good Kevin Durante is and this was his exact quote, "Damn he's so good he's almost as good as T-Mac was."

That statement blew my mind! Tracy Mcgrady was a poor man's Kobe Bryant even at the prime of his career. Tmac was lucky enough to be 6-9 and be an adequate enough shooter to be able to shoot over people.

I will never understand why he was ever given a max contract because he vanished just as fast as he was crowned a good player.

Web of horrors

Ok so I'll preface this by saying I was about 12 when the laker kings rivalry was at it's peak in the early 200's. Even as a young boy I knew I hated Chris Webber but more importantly I hated the fact that people believed he was any good.

This is the same genius who called a timeout he didn't have and in turn lost his team a chance at a national championship!

Chris Webber was a powerforward who played like a slow fat shooting guard and I will always remember the man who could never beat the lakers and for that he is overrated.

Redskin rash

It's official I have completely given up on Donavon McNabb. I was on of his last and only supporters going back to his Philly days. I feel betrayed, how did he not know I was one of the last fans who thought he could still make a difference for a team?

The biggest mistake I feel I made was believing that his age, 34, he still bad enough in the tank to lead a team to the playoffs. The flaw in my logic was the fact that McNabb has always been an extremely overrated!!

In his 10 Seasons in an Eagles uniform McNabb had at least 6 Superbowl caliber teams yet he only made it to one big game and he literally ran out of gas. I feel bad for the guy but I feel worse for myself for believe g in him.

Mile high letdown

I was just reading the latest football news and apparently Josh McDaniels has been relieved of his head coaching duties for the Denver Broncos. The Broncos saw no reason to allow McDaniels to finish his second season as the Broncos head man, all I can say is... about time!

Just because McDaniels fell off the Bill Belichick coaching tree he was given the keys to the castle of one of the biggest franchises in football. In his tenure as head coach of the Broncos he has done nothing more than run his franchise quarterback out of town and lost more games than he's won in one of the worst divisions in football. All I can say is good riddance.

America's fallen quarterback

When I was watching the Dallas Cowboys over Thanksgiving I noticed that they could have and should have won with John Kitna as their quarterback. That's right America's team looked better with Kitna than it had all year with Tony Romo.

Does anyone even know where Tony Romo went to college before getting picked up by the cowboys in 2005? I do... and believe me it's not very impressive, Eastern Illinois. No wonder he came out of nowhere when he took over for Drew Bledsoe five years ago.

It's impossible to name one big game Tony Romo ever won, I mean would this guy even be famous if he hadn't been in a relationship with Jessica Simpson and Carrie Underwood? In reality those are the two biggest wins of his career.

Kidds play

The other day I was arguing sports with my brother, as usual, and we began discussing the NBA and it's aging point guards like Steve Nash and Jason Kidd. Our argument focused on Jason Kidd. My brother was saying that Kidd has always been overrated and doesn't even have the stats necessary to put him up on the pantheon of great point guards.

Well after doing research for once in his life my brother was right, Jason Kidd was never really that good. How could I have not known this? For his career Kidd has averaged less than 14 points and 9 assists per game!

This man belongs no where near the hall of fame with these stats and the only reason he is on the all time assist list is because he is 100 years old and has been in the NBA for 70 years.

The ol' head ball choke

For 12 years the ol' head ball coach, Steve Spurrier, walked up and down the sidelines in Florida as the head football coach for the University of Florida. Even back then I was never sold on the iconic image bestowed upon him as a great coach.

In twelve years Spurrier won just one national title but at least he had one so I bit my tongue and didnt call him overrated even though I wanted to really bad. Following the 2001 season Spurrier took the money to go coach in the NFL and won a total of 12 games in two years.

Since his return to the college ranks Spurrier continues to prove my original feelings about him right, he's really not that good. Since taking over for the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2005 Spurrier has not won a national title let alone a SEC title. The closest to an SEC title Spurrier has gotten was last Saturday when his team was destroyed by Auburn in the SEC title game.

The guy can obviously coach if he's been around for this long but maybe it's time people realize that he is just an average coach that caught lightning in a bottle one season and won a championship and he will never do it again.

Life in the wrong Lane

What is there to really say about Lane Kiffin? How did this guy ever get one high profile job let alone three? This is a clear example of how a man's last name can carry him to riches and undeserving career success.

Monte Kiffin is considered the greatest defensive football coach in the history of the NFL and he also happens to be Lane's father. Lane first popped onto the scene with the Oakland Raiders as their head coach after a short career of being a coordinator around the NFL. Lane went on to a less than stellar 5 wins in 20 games before being fired and publicly embarrassed by Raiders owner Al Davis.

After being fired Kiffin somehow found a way to get hired at the University of Tennessee as their new head football coach at a very prestigious and tradition rich football program. Lane began his career at Tennessee like he left Oakland, filled with controversy. After just one year in which he went a pitiful seven and six USC hired him as their new head coach.

I truly do not understand why this man keeps getting a job. Kiffin just wrapped up the worst season USC has seen in six years. I have to be missing something because this man continues to get amazing job after amazing job when he has never won more than eight wins in a season at any level as a head coach.

Luck of the Cardinal

Ok so this blog has been and will remain about overrated athletes and sports figures but this is a special post because I feel it necessary to mention one of the most UNderrated players in sports, Andrew Luck.

Holy crap is this kid good. Now I've been telling everybody I know for the last two years that Luck is special and he hasn't let me down yet. In fact he's made me look like a genius by carrying Stanford to a number four national ranking and earning himself an invitation to the Heisman finalists show in New York.

Just this season alone Luck is averaging a quarterback rating of 166 with 28 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards at Stanford! Trust me this kid is a future hall of famer in the NFL and this is the only time he will ever be on my blog because he is so damn good!

Buckey black eye

For the last two off seasons Terrelle Pryor has been at the top of the list in the Heisman race in the world of college football. Now for the second straight year Pryor has failed to live up the hype of the preseason and once again finds himself on the outside looking in at the finalists.

Pryor is six feet six inches and 233 pounds, in other words he's built like an ANIMAL! I mean can you imagine trying to tackle a man his size. Pryor was expected to be the next great quarterback that would dominate college football and lead Ohio State to multiple national championships but in his 3 years as a starter he has only one bowl win and zero title appearances.

Rotten in the big apple

Over the past summer where Lebron James dominated the free agency talk and rumors the New York Knicks had virtually promised their fans that they were the ones who were going to land the king. When Lebron tucked his tale between his legs and scurried over to Miami the Knicks needed to sign a big name in order save face.

Que Amare Staudemire! The Knicks gave him a five year 100 million dollar deal to come to Manhattan and dunk. In reality that's all he can do, dunk. Nevermind the fact that he is nearly seven feet tall and dunking comes natural and easy to him.

Amare impressed us all his first few years in the league with his thunderous dunks and earned all the buzz that surrounded him, the only problem is that seven years later he is the exact same player. Amare has not improved any part of his game, besides his medium range jumper, and continues to have zero moves around the basket, in other words if he's not dunking he's not scoring.

The atrociousness of Amare's defense deserves an entire paragraph devoted to it. When the Knicks are playing defense they might as well be playing four on five because Amare has never played defense a day in his life, it's almost as if he and Chris Bosh have been working together to see who can be the worst defensive 7 footer in the league.

Green with envy

The point guard position in the NBA is filled with amazing talent for the first time in years. In fact it is fair to say that it is the deepest position in the league. With all of the great point guards in the league it is ridiculous to believe the hype for Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics.

For starters Rondo has averaged 10 points and seven assists for his career, not really elite point guard numbers. The next thing that drives me crazy is the fact that everyone is in a frenzy about how many assists he's averaging this year, 14, when he has FOUR hall of famers on his team!

The man can't even run an offense if it's not in a fast break. Take the two NBA finals against the Lakers as an example. The Lakers literally gave him about 10 to eight feet of separation every time he had the ball forcing him to make plays by himself and he could not hack it!

So for now let's leave all the praise and hype for point guards who truly deserve it like Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Steve Nash, but if your into small point guards who can only pass it to legends and have zero offensive skills take Rondo he's all yours.

Facts about Flacco

In the sequel to my previous post about the Baltimore Ravens comes the major reason why they are overrated, Joe Flacco.

Joe Flacco is a mediocre quarterback at best that has been getting called a premiere quarterback ever since the Ravens were predicted to win the Superbowl.

Joe Flacco wasn't even good enough to get a division one scholarship out of high school, instead he put up inflated stats at the University of Delaware. That's right, DELAWARE. Flacco is a serviceable quarterback at best but Baltimore will need much more than that if they want to win a Superbowl.

Superbust not Bowl

Coming into the NFL season the Baltimore Ravens were every "experts" pick to go to the Superbowl, after watching them play tonight against the Steelers I could not disagree more.

On paper the Ravens seem to have all the tools to make a big Superbowl push but all the paper talent has not come to fruition.

The Ravens are ranked in the middle teens in nearly every stat that matters including passing yards and rushing yards a game. This means that the Ravens have a mediocre team at best.

With the great amount of parody in the NFL this year there are at least five teams that are better than the hyped Ravens. The defense is always hard hitting but with that terrible offense a Superbowl is just wishful thinking.

Money talks...doesn't fight

After last months beat down of Antonio Margarito at the hands of the best fighter in the world Manny Pacquiao the super fight between Manny and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is on everybody's mind. I hate to break it to all of you who want to see this fight but it's never going to happen!

"Money" Mayweather, as he likes to call himself, has been ducking and hiding from Manny Pacquiao for the last three years. Mayweather is absolutely terrified of the "pac-man".

Mayweather claims he is one of the best fighters of all time despite the fact that he has never beaten a big name fighter besides a washed up Oscar De La Hoya. The fighters that both men have fought were dispatched much faster and easier by Pacquiao. Until "Money" steps up to the challenge he will continue to live in Pacquiao's shadow.

Not Werth the money

Over this weekend Jayson Werth cashed in on a 7 year 126 million dollar contract. What the hell just happened?

The terrible Washington Nationals just made sure that their team will stay terrible for a long time to come. This is a classic example of handcuffing a franchise with a HORRIBLE contract. This contract keeps the Nationals from signing other free agents and makes Jayson Werth virtually un-tradeable.

Jayson Werth just became one of the highest paid players in baseball at the age of 31!! Statistically players begin to decline after the age of 30. This means that Werth's numbers will be going down, and the worst part.... his numbers aren't that great!

In his career Werth has averaged under .300 batting, less than 30 home runs, and less than 90 RBI's, how is that worth 126 million dollars!!!?? The fact is that every off season there is always one team that over pays for a decent player, this year that sucker team is the Washington Nationals.

Brock Can't walk the walk

UFC 121 feels like a long time ago, seeing as it happened in late October, but the resounding ass kicking dished out by Cain Velasquez to Brock Lesnar is still relevant and left one burning question..... What the hell were we thinking?

I will admit that I drank the "Kool-aid" on Brock I mean look at him. He looks like a viking warrior about to rape and pillage my neighborhood!

Now let me fully explain this I picked Cain Velasquez to beat Brock but I never in my wildest dreams thought it would go down the way it did, with Brock getting man handled but now that I've had time to digest everything why didn't I see that before?

Brock has a whopping 5-2 MMA record. How can a man be the best at his sport after just seven fights? The bigger issue is that Brock has only been practicing his craft for a very short time compared to the years his opponents have been training. Brock's technique is just not very good and I feel foolish for falling for his gladiator physique and looking past his flawed skills.

Argentine let down

Soccer, or football to the rest of the sports world, is by far the most popular sport in the world. As a result the FIFA world cup is the biggest sporting event in the world where legends of the pitch are made.
Didn't score a single goal in the World Cup!!!!

Leading into the 2010 FIFA World Cup Lionel Messi was considered by most as the best player in the world. The stage was set for the hyped striker to show the world why he was the best in the world... Messi had other plans.

Messi did not score a single goal in the biggest stage sports has to offer. How can it be that Messi scored a staggering 34 goals for his club team Barcelona in one of the best leagues in the world but failed to score one simple goal?

The biggest excuse I heard throughout the World Cup this last summer was that Messi played great but just barely missed several times, aren't the best in the world suppose to able to put away those close shots?

All I know is the truly great players live for that big spotlight and take over the competition with their desire to win and don't need excuses for their crappy play. Little Lionel Messi just isn't made for the big stage.

Melo who?

Carmelo Anthony has been in the news lately involved in possible trade scenarios and rumors but no team has pulled the trigger on a potential blockbuster trade to acquire the services of Carmelo. The truth is that he's honestly not that good.
Great Talent can only get you so far.

When talking about the NBA's elite players there are are two different tiers; the superstars and the franchise players. Carmelo is just a superstar and not a franchise player.

Before I get a bunch of nasty comments consider this, Carmelo was almost traded to the bulls recently but Jokim Noah was the untouchable player that held up the deal. Now imagine if Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, or Kevin Durant was being traded, do you think the Bulls wouldn't trade Jokim Noah?
Noah was the reason the Melo trade didn't happen

The truth is that the Nuggets never even made it out of the 1st round of the NBA playoffs until Chauncey Billips was added to the roster. This goes to show as talented as Melo is, he's just not equipt to lead a franchise.

King without a throne.

As the NBA season approaches all I've been hearing is how great the new "Big Three" are going to be in Miami. The primary reason for this has to do with the acquisition of Lebron James.

Has anyone stopped to ask why? What has Lebron ever accomplished to deserve such a frenzy? The answer is absolutely nothing. The last major championship Lebron ever won was a high school state and national championship way back in 2003.

I do recognize the fact that Lebron is an amazing talent and he has the ability to be a once in a lifetime player, but just because he has the skills to be great doesn't mean he will be. I don't blame Lebron for making his "decision" this summer and I don't even blame him for the hype that surrounds him, I blame the media, and the fans, including myself.

Lebron has been compared to Jordan from the first time he showed up on national TV as a high school kid dominating his peers. In reality Lebron prefers to be Scotty Pippen and not Jordan. We were the ones who saw his talent and just assumed that he wanted to be everything we wanted. So in short don't believe the hype but don't blame Lebron for it either.

Not a real king

Mr. Abra Cadabra

So I was listening to sports radio the other day while driving home when the two hosts began discussing who the best big man in the NBA was. These two morons agreed that Dwight Howard was "obviously" the best big man in the league, I almost crashed into the center divider on the freeway I was so distraught.

How can the "best" big man in the league have no offense?
Dwight Howard, or Superman as he likes to call himself, is just an example of how pathetic the center position has become in the NBA. Dwight Howard is beyond one dimensional, all the man can do is dunk!! Ok fine he can play defense at a high level but that's it, not nearly enough production to account for the label of "best" big man.

LOOK! it's a bird, it's a plane, on now wait Superman is being posterized
Reflect if you will on the playoff push the magic had 2 years ago when they went to the finals, can you remember one instance while watching when you thought to yourself, " Damn they can't stop Dwight!" The fact of the matter is that Dwight Howard is no superman at best he is Clark Kent on steroids.

Dwight Howard may be big and strong but watching him try to execute a simple drop step or a seal is like trying to watch Mike "The Situation" dance. So remember kids Superman does not exist no matter how many meaningless slam dunk competitions he wins.

Salt Lake City Robbery

For my second post I am going to show that athletes are not the only ones who are overrated, coaches are not safe from getting more credit than they deserve.

In this post I'm focusing on a great travesty that occurred last summer when the Basketball Hall of Fame inducted Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan into the hall of fame. What the hell did Sloan do to deserve to be part of the 2009 hall of fame class which included David Robinson, John Stockton, and oh yeah MICHAEL FREAKING JORDAN!

The hall of fame should be reserved for players and coaches who had remarkable success in the NBA including multiple championships and records. Jerry Sloan has been the head coach for the Utah Jazz since 1988 and has produced as many NBA championships as I have........ Zero!!!
Pat Riley has 6 rings!

The Zen Master's 11 rings should make Jerry Sloan cry.
How can a coach be in the hall of fame when he has never won the ultimate prize? In the words of Herm Edwards, "You play the game to win!". Winning is the only thing that should come into play with a coaching career because that's the job of the man in charge, not to score points, or get rebounds, his only job is to coach a team to a championship.
Sloan wasted Malone and Stockton.

Karl Malone and John Stockton are one of the best one-two punch combination the NBA has ever seen and Sloan had them on his team for their entire careers and still couldn't win a single ring! If Phil Jackson or Larry Brown or Pat Riley had these two players in their prime they would have coached them to a dynasty.

How can a sports fan think that Jerry Sloan deserves to be in the same hall of fame as Phil Jackson and Red Auerbach? I mean he did get close to winning a title twice and one could make the case that he was never going to win one as long as Jordan was playing, but I mean Jordan has been out of the league for almost a decade now and Sloan still has nothing to show for it!

Jerry Sloan sports a playoff record of 92 wins and 106 losses and yet we're suppose to believe he is one of the greatest coaches of all time? Sounds more like he is a Jockstrap not a star.

The King of Overrated

When it comes to overrated athletes I decided to kick off my blog with the poster child for overrated players, Peyton Manning.

Now I know most of the people reading this are gasping right now saying, "What kind of an idiot thinks Manning isn't great?!" or, "This guy doesn't know anything about sports!". Before everybody loses their minds let me first clarify what this blog is all about.

I am discussing players that are over-hyped and overrated I am not necessarily saying that these athletes are no good at what they do, all I am saying is that they have become stars in American sports and are idolized more so than other athletes who deserve the attention.

Now, that being said back to Peyton Manning, this case falls under the category of obviously the guy can play football and obviously he is one of the best at his position. My problem with Peyton Manning is that frankly he is not this football god that EVERY football analyst makes him out to be.

In Football, or any sport for that matter, the goal of every season and every athlete is to win a championship. The regular season is nothing more than a stepping stone that launches you to playoff and championship glory. In the case of Peyton Manning his post- season stats are nothing short of average.
I could win a Super Bowl if this guy plays for the other team.

In the 20 playoff games that Manning has played in he is a less than stellar 10-10. This record shouldn't impress anybody and moreover it disproves the notion of Manning being a "great" quarterback. In the rare occasion that Manning actually made it all the way to the Super Bowl he does have one win against the Bears who apparently sold their soul to make it to the Super Bowl because they were terrible at everything except defense and special teams. Please excuse my lack of appreciation for a guy who BARELY outplayed Rex Grossman and was handed an MVP trophy despite the fact that the colts defense and running game were the reasons they won that game, in fact I would make the case that the Colts won that game despite of Manning's mediocre performance.

More recently lets look back to this past February where Manning was again in the Super Bowl and in the perfect situation to shut me up and prove his "greatness". Instead of making me look like a douche bag Manning made me look like a genius when I said I would choose a handful of quarterbacks over Manning when I need to win a big game. Manning went on to throw less than 70% for the game including one interception that put the game away and gave the colts no chance to win. Unfortunately this time around Rex Grossman wasn't there to make Manning look good, instead Drew Brees threw for over 80%, over 300 yards, 2 touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

The great quarterbacks of all time win more games than they lose in the post-season and are the reason why they win the big game. When you think of Montana, Favre, and Brady there are a handful of memorable plays that clinched big wins for there team, but with Manning there is not a single memory of him making that one jaw-dropping play to win a game.(handing off the ball to Dominic Rhodes or Joseph Addai doesn't count)

Manning Hiding his face after yet ANOTHER loss in the playoffs
Peyton Manning is by far the best REGULAR SEASON quarterback in the history of the NFL but in reality who cares about the regular season? The regular season means absolutely nothing, and just like you can always pencil in the Colts for 12 wins a season, you can also pencil in Manning folding in the most important time of the season. So the next time your watching Sportscenter and every analyst is raving about how "great" Manning is just remember that he is a jockstrap and not a star.
